How to Read a CBD Lab Report (Without a Science Degree)
You find a hemp product that looks promising. The flavor sounds good, the packaging is cute, and the label makes a few big promises.
Then you click the lab report: and suddenly you’re staring at acronyms, percentages, detection limits, and a whole lot of tiny print.
No pressure. You don’t need a science degree to understand a CBD certificate of analysis, usually called a COA. You just need to know where to look and what the most common terms mean.
A COA is a report from a laboratory that shows what was found in a specific batch of product. It can help you check potency, THC content, and potential contaminants before you buy.

First, what exactly is a COA?
A certificate of analysis is a lab report for a specific product batch or lot.
It typically includes:
- The product name
- The batch or lot number
- The testing laboratory
- The date the sample was tested
- The cannabinoid profile
- Safety and contaminant testing results
Think of it as a product snapshot. It tells you what an independent lab found in that particular batch: not necessarily every batch the brand has ever made.
That distinction matters. A report for one batch of gummies may not apply to a newer batch with a different lot number.

Step 1: Match the product to the report
Before reading the numbers, make sure you’re looking at the right report.
Check these details first:
Product name
Does the COA name the same product you’re holding? A report for a tincture should not be used to verify a gummy. A report for one flavor should not automatically be used for another.
Batch or lot number
Look for a batch or lot number on the product packaging. Then find that same number on the COA.
If the numbers don’t match, the report may not describe what’s in your bottle or bag. That doesn’t automatically mean the product is bad, but it does mean you need more information.
Testing date
A recent report is generally more useful than an old one, especially if the product is still being manufactured and sold. Products can change between batches, and testing should keep up.
Laboratory information
The report should clearly identify the lab that performed the testing. Look for the lab’s name, contact information, and: when available: information about its accreditation.
An independent third-party lab is preferable because it is separate from the company making or selling the product. Some shoppers also look for ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation, a standard related to laboratory competence and reliable testing practices.
Step 2: Find the cannabinoid profile
The cannabinoid section may be called:
- Cannabinoid profile
- Potency panel
- Cannabinoid analysis
- Potency results
This is where you’ll find CBD, THC, and sometimes other cannabinoids such as CBG, CBC, or CBN.
Look at the units
CBD may be listed as:
- Milligrams per serving
- Milligrams per container
- Milligrams per gram
- Milligrams per milliliter
- Percentage by weight
The key is to compare the COA to the product label using the same unit.
For example, if a bottle contains 1,000 mg of CBD total, the COA may list CBD as a percentage or as milligrams per gram. If you’re unsure how to compare the numbers, reach out to the brand. A transparent company should be willing to explain it in plain English.
Compare the tested amount to the label
The lab result should be reasonably close to the amount advertised on the package. Minor variation can happen because hemp is a natural product and laboratory testing has limits.
A significant difference between the label and the report is worth pausing over. If a product claims 1,000 mg of CBD but the report shows substantially less, that’s a quality and consistency concern.
Check THC, too
Even if you’re shopping for CBD, check the THC line.
Some products contain trace amounts of THC, especially full-spectrum products. Others may be broad-spectrum or THC-free according to the brand’s formulation. The COA can help confirm whether the product’s cannabinoid profile matches its description.

Step 3: Understand “ND” and “PASS”
Two terms show up often on COAs:
ND: Not Detected
ND means the lab did not detect that substance above its reporting limit.
It does not always mean the substance is absolutely absent. It means the amount, if any, was below the level the lab could reliably report.
That’s still useful information. Just remember: ND is not the same thing as “tested for nothing.”
PASS
PASS generally means the result met the applicable limit listed on the report.
The limit may be called an action level, maximum limit, or regulatory limit. Check the specific report because limits can vary based on the product type and the testing standard being used.
You want to see clear status information for the major safety panels: not just a cannabinoid number with no context.
Step 4: Review the safety panels
Potency is only part of the picture. A complete COA should also show whether the product was tested for potential contaminants.
Look for these sections:
Heavy metals
Hemp can absorb substances from the soil, which is why reputable testing may include:
- Lead
- Arsenic
- Cadmium
- Mercury
You’ll typically want to see results marked ND or below the listed action level, along with an overall PASS status.
Pesticides
Pesticide testing checks for unwanted chemical residues. A strong report will list the compounds tested and show whether each one was detected.
A report that says only “pesticides: pass” may be harder to evaluate than one that provides a clear list of analytes and results. More detail makes the report easier to trust.
Residual solvents
Residual solvent testing is especially relevant for extracts, oils, concentrates, and vape products. It checks for leftover processing solvents such as ethanol, acetone, butane, or propane.
For a tincture or other hemp extract, look for a residual solvent panel when applicable. Results should be ND or below the listed limits.
Microbials and mycotoxins
These panels may check for mold, yeast, bacteria, and toxins produced by mold. Common examples include Salmonella, E. coli, Aspergillus, and aflatoxins.
Again, look for clear results and a PASS status.
What does “organic” mean on a CBD product?

A COA can help verify:
- Cannabinoid potency
- THC levels
- Contaminant results
- Batch information
But a COA by itself does not automatically prove that a product is certified organic.

- Organic claims tell you about sourcing or production standards.

- Does the product name match the COA?

- Is THC listed clearly?

If a report is missing major information, doesn’t match the batch, or shows a FAIL, it’s reasonable to pause and ask questions before using the product.
